HUGIN NEWS/Heliocentris Powers Shell Eco-marathon Winners to Victory

10.06.2008
Berlin, Germany - 10th June 2008. Heliocentris Fuel Cells AG, the fuel cell system integrator, is proud to announce that the winner of this year's Shell Eco-marathon race in the hydrogen fuel cell class was equipped with a Heliocentris' fuel cell. In the last three years of this prestigious event, teams using Heliocentris fuel cell systems have achieved a podium finish, in each and every year, being first in class on two occasions. The systems supplied by Heliocentris are the Nexa® Power Module of Ballard and Heliocentris' own NP50 fuel cell power system. "These two systems are the bedrock of our fuel cell systems range and are being used throughout the world by thousands of fuel cell experts," said Dr. Henrik Colell, CEO of Heliocentris Fuel Cells AG. Having these systems used in the Shell Eco-marathon to such good effect is a great example of our technology and the quality of our systems. We congratulate Professor Ulrich Hochberg of the University of Applied Sciences of Offenburg and his team for winning the hydrogen fuel cell class this year," Dr. Colell added. Professor Hochberg said: "We decided to use the fuel cell integrated in the Nexa® power module obtained from Heliocentris because after three years of research and use, the system is clearly one of the best in its class. We optimized the control electronics to achieve maximum output and ultra-high efficiency resulting in an outstanding system performance with respect to the Shell Eco-marathon requirements." The team from the University of Applied Sciences (Offenburg, Germany) came first in the hydrogen fuel cell category this year. The prototype vehicle - "Schluckspecht" - achieved a competition best distance of 3198 km per the hydrogen equivalent of a liter of Shell Super benzine - about the same as traveling from Berlin to Bagdad. The Nexa® Power Module is one of the most widely sold fuel cell systems in the 1 kW power class. The system is noted for its outstanding price to performance ratio and reliable operation. Similarly, the NP50 also boasts outstanding reliability and robustness in the 50 watt power class. The Shell Eco-marathon Europe was held this year at the Nogaro Motor Circuit in France and included 200 teams from schools and universities in over 20 European countries. The principle of the race is to design and build a vehicle that uses the least amount of fuel to travel the farthest distance. The Shell Eco-marathon in its current form began in 1985 in France, attracting thousands of young engineers and scientists.
