Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) said Monday it has purchased solar power from three providers, BP PLC's (BP) BP Solar, SunEdison LLC, and SunPower Corp. (SPWR) subsidiary PowerLight, as part of a pilot project to determine solar power viability.

The Bentonville, Ark., retailer said the solar power was purchased for a total of 22 Wal-Mart stores, Sam's Clubs and distribution centers.

The total solar power production from the 22 sites is estimated to be as much as 20 million kilowatt-hours per year, the company said.
