Design win of over EUR 8 million for intelligent buses in Belgium
Eching near Munich, January 12, 2009. Kontron AG, one of the world's
leading providers of embedded computer systems, kicks off the New Year with
a further multi-million euro order: the Walloon Transport Company in
Belgium has opted for Kontron technologies for future complex applications.
A corresponding master agreement entailing an order volume of over EUR 8
million has now been signed. As part of the first step, the plan is to
equip over 2,500 buses from 2010 with an innovative system in the area of
local public transport, which will ensure a significant boost in terms of
safety, reliability, and punctuality.
The networked embedded computers are based on particularly energy-saving
and reliable Atom Processors from Intel, which optimally meet the high
demands made of them. Using GPS positioning and GSM mobile modules, they
guarantee efficient fleet management as well as reliable location
monitoring and schedule optimization; FireWire interfaces allow for rapid
data reconciliation at depot, and RFID technology allows the implementation
of innovative types of non-cash ticketing. 'We've already started to
develop these complex systems, and we are very pleased to have received an
order that further strengthens our foothold in the local public transport
segment,' commented Ulrich Gehrmann, Kontron's CEO. Numerous applications
produced by the company are in use around the world, for example for
steering driverless subway trains, on both local and high-speed trains, and
in on-board PCs on buses.
